This strategy targets visitors browsing your products by offering a discount once an order reaches a certain threshold. Discount code amounts are applied to the checkout cart automatically. No copy/pasting, no follow-ups.

What once took only the most advanced BDOW! (formerly Sumo) users to achieve is now conveniently bundled up in a BDOW! Shortcut.

Benchmarks

  • Aim for a 10% - 20% increase in your average order value.

  • Look for an average redemption rate of 10% (meaning for each code issued, you want to drive 10% of your AOV).

How do I set this up?

Start the wizard by navigating to Monetize > Shortcuts menu item to start the wizard.

Click Create New Shortcut and then select the Increase Average Order Value option.

Configuring the Smart Bars

You'll need to configure multiple Smart Bar states in Step 1. Make sure you use the Next button to proceed through each one.

Selecting the intro offer

The first Smart Bar explains the discount and minimum order value to activate it. You can choose from a few different discount types as well. Finally, tweak the color scheme to match your branding (this will be applied across all the campaign's Smart Bars).

We’ve seen a lot of success at the $100, $150 & $200 tiers, using 10%, 15% & 20% off. So this is a great place to start. Also work around your current average order value. If it’s $23, set your tier lower to target an amount higher than that (for example, 10% orders over $50, 15% over $75, 20% over $100, etc.).

Customizing the in-progress bar

The next Smart Bar is when the customer has started adding items to the cart but has not reached your target AOV. The numeric values will be automatically filled in to match your discount settings.

While BDOW! has some preconfigured options, you might wish to edit the text. The key here are the {price_diff} and {discount_amount} variables. Make sure to include those (with the {} characters) and we'll make sure the price differential and discount goal are properly displayed within your customized message.

Editing the Discount Achieved bar

The last Smart Bar to configure is when the customer reaches your AOV goal. The discount will automatically be applied to checkout. Just like the in-progress bar, you can tweak the messaging (make sure to include the {discount_amount} variable).

Adding multiple discount tiers

The Discount Achieved Smart Bar also lets you add sub headers with additional discount goals! Click Add if you'd like to set another order value/discount target:

Note that you can remove an extra tier using the trash icon.

Setting visibility rules

By default, the In-Progress bar will only appear when a visitor is close to achieving the target AOV. You can configure this Minimum Cart Value on Step 2.

What are Advanced Display Rules?

If you enable Advanced Display Rules, you can choose where the form appears with much more granularity by leveraging the Display Rules editor from our List Builder tool. For example, you can always hide the In-Progress bar on certain pages, or ensure that is always visible on others.

Connecting your e-commerce platform

Step 3 is to select your e-commerce platform so that BDOW! can manage the discount codes.

Once that is done, you're ready to go! Click the Done! Publish button to launch your new Average Order Value campaign!

The Abandoned Cart and AOV Smart Bar combination

These work perfect together. Keep in mind, these are targeting two different user behaviors: people shopping and people leaving. It’s perfectly fine to use the AOV to incentive a purchase and still offer the abandon cart to salvage the purchase and get an email for your efforts.
