When to Target Query Parameters
Having a BDOW! (formerly Sumo) form display only when certain query parameters are present within your site's URL can be a very useful strategy.
Consider the following situation:
You have a pre-existing subscriber list that is populated with emails collected by another, non-Sumo form. You would like to send these subscribers an email containing the URL to a new product on your site, and you would prefer to not have your Sumo forms display to the visitors being directed to your site from this email.
By default, your subscribers will see the form set to display on this product page.
In order to prevent this from happening, set a query parameter in the link to your page within your email, and create a Display Rule to prevent your popup from appearing when that Query Parameter exists in a visitor's URL.
You can apply this technique to a number of situations including targeting social traffic, traffic from your paid ads, visitors coming to your site from email newsletters, visitors being directed to your site from affiliate links, etc. If you ever want to have a Sumo form display or not display on a URL with a certain query parameter present, you would use this same strategy.
How to Create Display Rules for Targeting Query Parameters
To effectively target query params, you will need to set up our Query Parameter Display Rule.
You can find more information about our Display Rules here.
In order to set up a Display Rule that instructs your form(s) to display (or not display) when a query parameter is present on your site, simply follow the steps below:
Navigate to the List Builder app within your Sumo dashboard and Edit your desired form.
Navigate to the Visibility tab of your form and click the Add New Rule button.
If you would like for your form to display on URLs with a certain query paremeter present, make sure the default option, Show, is selected. Otherwise, select the Not Show option.
Select the URLs option, then click the With A Query Parameter option.
Enter your desired Query Parameter Name in the field.
Select the option that applies to your use case from the dropdown menu.
If you select the options Contains/Does Not Contain or Is Equal To/Does Not Equal, the value you must insert will be the value after the '=' that follows the query parameter name.
For example, if you would like your Sumo form to display specifically on the url, http://www.mysite.com?sumo=email, you would need to create the rule below:
